The Big Apple in Queensland's Granite Belt region has had quite a journey since its creation in 1978. Originally crafted as a bright green Granny Smith apple by local artisan Johnny Ross, it stood proudly at a petrol station in Applethorpe. Over the years, the apple underwent a colourful transformation, being remodelled as a red and yellow Royal Gala apple - perhaps reflecting changing tastes in apple varieties. The 4-metre tall sculpture has since been relocated to Thulimbah, continuing to celebrate the region's apple-growing heritage. The Granite Belt is Queensland's only true cold-climate wine and apple region, making this Big Thing a fitting tribute to the area's agricultural significance.
