The Lowdown
Standing at the gateway to Coffs Harbour since 1964, the Big Banana holds the distinction of being Australia's first purpose-built Big Thing. Created by banana grower John Landy, this 13-metre long, 5-metre high concrete banana was designed to attract passing motorists on the Pacific Highway. What started as a simple roadside attraction has grown into a sprawling entertainment complex featuring waterslides, ice skating, laser tag, and toboggan rides. The working plantation behind the complex still grows bananas, and visitors can learn about tropical fruit cultivation. The Big Banana sparked a phenomenon that now includes over 1,000 Big Things across Australia.
