The Big Grape in Mildura pays tribute to the Sunraysia region's incredible grape-growing heritage with a striking oversized bunch of grapes that towers over visitors. Located in the heart of Australia's largest grape-producing region, this fruity sculpture represents the backbone of Mildura's economy, which produces around 80% of Australia's dried grapes and a significant portion of its wine grapes. The sculpture features a cluster of plump purple grapes complete with leaves and vine, capturing the luscious appearance of the fruit at harvest time. Mildura's grape industry dates back to the 1880s when the Chaffey brothers established irrigation systems that transformed the Murray River region from arid land into one of the world's most productive agricultural areas.

History
The Big Grape was erected in 1979 to celebrate Mildura's grape industry, which began in 1887 when Canadian irrigation engineers George and William Chaffey developed the irrigation systems that made large-scale agriculture possible in the region. The transformation of the arid Mallee country into Australia's fruit bowl is one of the great engineering achievements of colonial Australia. Today, the Sunraysia region around Mildura produces sultanas, currants, raisins, table grapes, and wine grapes that are exported around the world. The Big Grape stands as a symbol of this agricultural success story and the generations of farmers who have worked the land.
