The Big Koala at Phillip Island welcomes visitors to one of Australia's premier koala conservation facilities with its friendly 5-meter tall presence. Situated at the entrance to the Phillip Island Koala Conservation Centre, this lovable sculpture sets the tone for an educational and heartwarming experience with Australia's most cuddly-looking marsupial. The Big Koala captures the distinctive features of the species - the fluffy ears, prominent black nose, and sleepy expression - that have made koalas beloved around the world. Beyond the sculpture, the Conservation Centre offers elevated boardwalks through natural bushland where visitors can observe koalas in their natural habitat, sleeping in eucalyptus trees and occasionally munching on gum leaves.

History
The Big Koala was installed in 1995 as part of the Phillip Island Koala Conservation Centre's efforts to create an engaging and educational wildlife experience. The centre was established to protect and study the island's koala population, which had declined due to habitat loss and vehicle strikes. Today, the Conservation Centre is part of Phillip Island Nature Parks, a non-profit organization that manages the island's significant wildlife attractions. The Big Koala has become a beloved photo opportunity for the millions of visitors who travel to Phillip Island each year, many of whom come primarily for the famous Penguin Parade.
