The Big Lamb

The Big Lamb was erected in 1988 by the town of Guyra and the surrounding district to promote two industries that have shaped the local economy: lamb production and potato farming. The New England Tablelands have been prime sheep grazing country since the earliest days of European settlement, with merino wool and prime lamb production remaining major industries. At the same time, Guyra's high altitude (over 1,300 metres above sea level) and cool climate make it perfect for growing certified seed potatoes, which are disease-free stock sent to commercial growers across Australia. The unique design of the sculpture, showing a lamb standing over a potato plant, perfectly captures this dual agricultural identity that makes Guyra unique among Australian country towns.
