The Lowdown

Swoop the Big Barrwarrang stands proudly in Euroa's Seven Creeks Park, the largest magpie sculpture in Australia at 3.5 metres tall. Installed in August 2023, this magnificent artwork was created by local artists Steve Tobin and Tank from nearby Longwood. The name honours the Taungurung people - 'Barrwarrang' means magpie in their language. The project was initiated by the Euroa Chamber of Commerce and Community Action group through the Pitch My Project initiative. The sculpture celebrates Australia's love-hate relationship with magpies - feared during swooping season, admired for their beautiful warbling song, and the mascot of multiple football teams including AFL's Collingwood.

History

The Big Magpie was commissioned following a joint submission by the Euroa Chamber of Commerce and Euroa Community Action group to Council's Pitch My Project initiative in the 2022/23 Budget. Local artists Steve Tobin and Tank created Australia's biggest magpie sculpture, which was unveiled in August 2023. The community chose the name 'Swoop' while 'Barrwarrang' pays tribute to the Taungurung people.
