The Lowdown

The Big Meat Ant towers over visitors at Augathella Meat Ant Park on Main Street, a remarkable sculpture that's one million times bigger than the real insect it represents. Created by artist Amanda Feher using brass, copper, and steel, this 7.5-metre long ant is mounted on a wooden pole, appearing to look down at the ground below - just as a real meat ant would. The sculpture celebrates the town's beloved football team, the Mighty Meat Ants, known for their fearless play on the field. Plans for the Big Meat Ant began in 2003, but it wasn't until 2011 that the sculpture was finally installed. The surrounding Meat Ant Park features landscaped gardens, picnic tables, BBQ facilities, and a playground, making it an ideal rest stop for travellers on the Matilda Highway.

History

Plans for a Big Meat Ant in Augathella began in 2003 as a way to attract tourists to this small outback town on the Matilda Highway. The project took eight years to come to fruition, with the sculpture finally installed in 2011. Artist Amanda Feher created the remarkable 7.5-metre sculpture from brass, copper, and steel. The ant is mounted on a wooden pole, positioned as if looking down at the ground - exactly as a real meat ant would while foraging. The sculpture celebrates the town's football team, the Mighty Meat Ants, who earned their nickname through fearless, aggressive play.
