The Big Seat takes a playful approach to naming at Arthurs Seat, a 314-metre high point on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula that offers sweeping views across Port Phillip Bay to Melbourne. This oversized chair invites visitors to take a literal seat at 'Arthur's Seat', creating a fun photo opportunity that plays on words while celebrating one of Melbourne's most popular day-trip destinations. The lookout has been a tourist attraction since the early 1900s, and today the Arthurs Seat Eagle skylift carries visitors to the summit. The Big Seat adds a touch of whimsy to the spectacular natural beauty.

History
Arthurs Seat was named by Acting-Surveyor Charles Grimes in 1802 after Edinburgh's Arthur's Seat, which it was thought to resemble. The area became a popular tourist destination in the early 20th century, with the first chairlift opening in 1960. After closure and redevelopment, the Arthurs Seat Eagle skylift opened in 2016. The Big Seat sculpture was installed to give visitors a literal seat at Arthur's Seat, creating an irresistible photo opportunity that combines wordplay with spectacular views across Port Phillip Bay to Melbourne's skyline.
