The Big Whale at Eucla welcomes weary travellers who have just completed (or are about to begin) the epic crossing of the Nullarbor Plain. Situated at one of Australia's most remote roadhouse towns, just 12 kilometres from the South Australia border, this whale sculpture celebrates the marine life of the Great Australian Bight. The waters off the Nullarbor cliffs are a migration route for southern right whales and blue whales, making Eucla a fitting location for this marine tribute. After hundreds of kilometres of treeless plains, the Big Whale is a welcome sight for travellers seeking a photo op and a break from the road.

History
The Big Whale at Eucla celebrates the marine mammals that migrate through the waters of the Great Australian Bight. Each year between May and October, southern right whales travel to the sheltered bays of South Australia and Western Australia to calve and nurse their young. The Head of Bight viewing platform, west of Eucla, is one of Australia's best whale watching locations. The Big Whale sculpture acknowledges this annual natural spectacle and provides a welcome photo opportunity for Nullarbor travellers.
