The Lowdown

The Giant Jumping Crocodile bursts from the roadside at Adelaide River, advertising one of the Northern Territory's most thrilling tourist experiences - the jumping crocodile cruises. This massive crocodile sculpture captures the explosive moment when a saltwater croc launches from the water to snatch meat from a pole, the signature behaviour that draws visitors from around the world. Adelaide River, about an hour south of Darwin, is home to some of the largest and most aggressive saltwater crocodiles in Australia. The Giant Jumping Crocodile prepares visitors for the adrenaline rush that awaits on the river.

"Saltwater crocs can reach over 6 metres and live more than 70 years"

History

The Adelaide River jumping crocodile cruises began in the 1980s, when operators discovered that saltwater crocodiles would leap from the water to grab food held above the surface. The behaviour - which crocodiles use to catch birds and bats in the wild - became a tourist sensation. The cruises now operate daily, with massive crocodiles (some over 5 metres long) launching themselves almost completely out of the water. The Giant Jumping Crocodile sculpture was erected to mark this unique Top End attraction and capture the explosive power of these prehistoric predators.
