The Giant Pocket Watch hangs suspended beneath the historic shot tower in Melbourne Central, one of the city's most beloved and whimsical landmarks. This enormous hanging timepiece is actually a musical automata - every hour, the clock opens to reveal a scene of Australian wildlife accompanied by a rendition of 'Waltzing Matilda'. Galahs, koalas, and other creatures emerge and perform as shoppers gather below to watch the spectacle. The clock was installed when Melbourne Central opened in 1991, designed to complement the preserved 1889 shot tower that rises through the centre's glass cone roof.

"The clock plays 'Waltzing Matilda' every hour"
History
Melbourne Central shopping centre opened in 1991, built around the historic Coop's Shot Tower from 1889. The shot tower, which manufactured lead shot by dropping molten lead from the top, was preserved and enclosed in a spectacular glass cone. The Giant Pocket Watch was designed as a centrepiece attraction, combining Japanese engineering with Australian themes. Every hour, the clock opens like a pocket watch, and mechanical Australian animals emerge to the tune of 'Waltzing Matilda'. It has become one of Melbourne's most photographed attractions and a meeting point for generations of Melburnians.
